“So here’s the plan,” I said. “We will wait ________ the old man goes to sleep. Then, we will steal the key out of his britches.”
Tom scratched his chin like he was thinking hard. “Well, that plan would work, but it’s mighty ________. What good is planning something that is too easy?”
I’ve known Tom Sawyer all my life, and he always had to ________ things into an adventure. He ________ a new plan, and I agreed to it. I’d do anything to rescue Jim from the hut.
When everything was dark and still, we slipped down to the hut. We circled around, checking for ways in and out. Then I whispered through the slats, “Jim, are you in there?”
“Huck!” Jim called back. I could tell he was happy to hear my ________. “You came for me!”
“Yes,” I said. “And Tom Sawyer is here, too”
“Can you boys get me out of here?”
I looked ________ and saw a window high up that had a board nailed across it. “I bet Jim would fit through there,” I told Tom.
Tom just ________ his head. “That’s as easy as one, two, three. We need something that will take twice as long. We aren’t in any hurry.”
We kept on looking, then Tom said, “We’ll ________ him out.”
“Don’t worry, Jim,” I said.” We’ll help you.”
Tom and I went back for some shovels and set to work. It took a while, but we dug a tunnel under the ________.
When we broke through, we climbed through and looked around. There sat Jim on an old splintered ________. His foot was chained to the bedpost. He was covered in sweat, but he looked ________.
“Now, get me loose.” he said.
Tom pointed to the chain. “We need a ________.”
I ________ that the end of the chain was just a large ring under the post. “We can just lift the bed, and slip the chain out.”
Tom squinted his eyes at me. “No, Huck, that’s too simple. We need to saw(锯) it loose.”
Just then there was a commotion ________. Tom and I slunk out through the hole, kicked some dirt over it, and headed back ________.
The bushes rustled a little in the bushes, and Father Wolf dropped with his back legs under him, ready for his jump. Then, the most wonderful thing happened. Father Wolf stopped in the middle of his jump. He jumped before he saw what he was jumping at, and then he tried to stop himself. The result was that he jumped straight up into the air for four or five feet, and came down nearly where he left the ground.
“Man!” he said quickly. “A man cub. Look!”
Directly in front of him, holding on by a low branch, stood a naked(裸体的) brown baby. He was small and soft. He looked up into Father Wolf’s face, and laughed.
“Is that a man cub?” asked Mother Wolf. “I have never seen one. Bring it here.”
A wolf can, if necessary, hold an egg in his mouth without breaking it. And although Father Wolf’s jaws closed down on the child’s back, he did not even scratch his skin as he laid him down among the wolf cubs.
“How little! How naked, and how brave!” said Mother Wolf softly. The baby was moving between the cubs to get close to their warm skin. “Aha! He is taking his meal with the others. And so this is a man cub. Now, was there ever a wolf that could say she had a man cub among her children?”
“In the past I heard of such a thing, but never in our pack or in my time,” said Father Wolf. “He is without hair, and I could kill him with a touch of my foot. But see, he looks up and he is not afraid.”
At about noon one weekday in Maizidian, a busy business area in Beijing, office workers come in and out of a convenience (便利) store just as usual. Nearly all carry packaged (包装的) meats and drinks before hurrying back to work.
The store, owned by the Bianlifeng, sells 800 to 1,000 packaged meals, usually including rice and several smaller dishes, at lunchtime every workday. About 80 percent of the buyers are white-collar workers according to Bianlifeng. Reasonable (合理的) prices, convenience and quality of ready-to-eat meals have changed convenience stores into “kitchens” for many city workers.
Zhang Hui, 32, a manager at a foreign company in Shanghai, goes to these stores for most of her meals. She spends less than 10 yuan on breakfast, including steamed stuffed buns, porridge or soybean milk, and about 20 yuan on packaged meals for lunch and dinner each day. “When I’m in hurry, or when I have to eat alone, I will choose ready-to-eat foods in convenience stores, which are fast and make buying easy. This also saves me from feeling uncomfortable about eating alone in a restaurant.” Zhang said. “Moreover, the taste of such foods is acceptable.”
China has about 122,000 convenience stores, mainly in first-tier and second-tier cities (一线二线城市). With the changes of modern society, people seem to have faster lives. Most of them now don’t have as much time to cook as before. With more disposable income (可支配收入), people are more willing to spend on convenience. And now they are giving more importance to the environment and food safety. Ready-to-eat foods in convenience stores can meet these needs, mainly for a large number of young single people. Half of the buyers at convenience stores are those from 20 to 29, and more than 30 percent of them are office workers.
When you are shopping for the week’s food, you may get a large box or two of bottled water. On your way to a soccer game, it’s easy to take a cold one out of the fridge, right?
But all those plastic bottles use a lot of fossil fuels(矿物燃料). In fact, Americans buy more bottled water than any other country in the world, about 29 billion water bottles a year. In order to make all these bottles, 17 million barrels(桶)of crude oil are used. That’s enough oil to keep a million cars going for twelve months.
Americans drink bottled water because they think it is better for them than water out of the tap, but that’s not true. In the United States, local governments make sure water from the tap is safe. People love the convenience(便利)of bottled water. But maybe if they realized the problems it causes, they would try drinking from a glass at home or carrying water in a steel container instead of a plastic bottle.
Plastic bottles pollute the environment but recycling(回收)can help—instead of going out with the rubbish, plastic bottles can be turned into useful items. Sadly, for every six water bottles we use, only one makes it to the recycling bin. The rest are sent to landfills. Or, even worse, they end up as rubbish on the land and in rivers, lakes, and the ocean. Plastic bottles take many hundreds of years to disintegrate under the ground.
Betty Mclaughlin, who runs an organization called the Container Recycling Institute, says we should try using fewer bottles: “If you take one to school in your lunch, don’ t throw it away—bring it home and refill it from the tap for the next day. You refill a bottle as many times as you can before you recycle it.”
Remember this: Recycling one plastic bottle can save enough energy to power a 60-watt(瓦)light bulb for six hours.
